How Startups Can Build a Strong Proof of Concept

Learn how startups can test technical feasibility and key assumptions through a focused proof-of-concept project.

1 min read

A proof of concept (PoC) is a focused test used to determine whether a proposed idea or technical approach is feasible. It helps a startup reduce uncertainty before committing to a larger product build or commercial rollout.

Start by identifying the riskiest assumption. This may concern technical feasibility, performance, integration, user workflow or another critical requirement. Define the minimum evidence needed to evaluate that assumption.

Choose a test method and set boundaries for time, cost, data and resources. Document the test conditions and results so that another person can understand what was demonstrated and what remains unproven.

A successful PoC does not automatically establish customer demand, commercial viability, security or scalability. Those may require separate tests. Use the findings to decide whether to proceed, redesign or stop.

Frequently asked questions

Is a PoC the same as an MVP?

No. A PoC focuses on feasibility; an MVP is designed to test a usable product or value proposition with users.

What should a PoC report include?

The objective, method, evidence, limitations, cost and recommended next step.
