Financial Projections Every Startup Founder Should Understand

Understand startup revenue forecasts, operating costs, cash flow, runway and unit economics before making growth or funding decisions.

1 min read

Startup financial projections are structured estimates that help founders understand how revenue, expenses and cash requirements may evolve under different assumptions.

Start with the business model. Estimate how customers will be acquired, what they may pay and how often revenue may recur. List operating costs, salaries, technology expenses, marketing, taxes and other relevant commitments. Keep assumptions visible rather than hiding uncertainty in a single forecast.

Cash flow deserves particular attention because a business can appear profitable on paper while running short of cash. Track expected receipts, payment timelines and upcoming obligations. Estimate runway using available cash and projected net cash outflow, while recognising that spending and revenue may vary.

Build realistic, optimistic and conservative scenarios. Update projections when new information becomes available and explain the reasoning behind important changes.
