Corporate innovation ROI is difficult to assess if a programme measures only events, ideas or participants. Useful evaluation connects innovation activity to learning, implementation and business outcomes.
Before the programme begins, define its objective. It may be intended to reduce operational costs, improve customer experience, identify new revenue opportunities or build strategic capabilities.
Select measures suited to that objective. For example, an operational pilot might track processing time, error rates and implementation costs. A market experiment might track customer interest, conversion and revenue evidence.
Separate direct financial returns from learning outcomes and longer-term strategic benefits. Document assumptions, costs and the period being measured. Avoid attributing all improvements to the innovation programme without evidence.
